Chapter 14

“You decided not to take the job at the pharmacy,” Gloria guessed.

“Nope.”

“You’re already having car problems.”

“Wrong again. I love the Lexus,” Liz said.

“You broke a nail, and Chu’s is closed on Sundays,” Gloria teased.

“Haha. Very funny. I received a reply from Rasmussen Farms about the job. They want me to come in for an in-person interview tomorrow morning.”

“That’s great news. I bet it’s safe to say if they want to meet you, they want to talk to Paige, as well.”

“Probably.” Liz made an unhappy sound. “I don’t know anything about this job, what kind of skills they’re looking for. I can’t believe you talked me into this.”

“Remember when you sprang that singing event on me at Dreamwood’s Christmas party?”

“You ended up loving it.”

“I did, and maybe you’ll love working on a farm.”

“I am not a farm girl. In fact, I’m barely a small-town girl.”

“You only need to work there long enough to do a little snooping around, try to get a feel for the family dynamics, that kind of stuff,” Gloria said.

“I guess I really shouldn’t even worry about it. They’re going to take one look at me, discover I have nil farming skills, and laugh me right off their property.”

“Even though you don’t need experience, it probably wouldn’t hurt for you to have a little hands-on practicing.” Gloria slowly circled the room. “What time do they want you there?”

“They said to come in anytime between seven and eleven tomorrow morning.”

“I need to make a few phone calls. I have a couple places in mind where we might be able to squeeze you in for a crash course in farming.”

“Oh, goody,” Liz sarcastically said. “I can hardly wait.”

Gloria ignored the sarcasm, promising to begin working on a plan before hanging up.

Her first thought was Ruth. If anyone knew of a farm willing to allow Liz to practice some skills, her friend would know about it. She phoned Ruth, who promised to give it some thought and get back to her.

Up next was Lucy. “I was getting ready to call you. Paige got a reply about the job. They want her to come in for an in-person interview. She’s excited about it.”

“Liz was contacted as well, although I wouldn’t describe her response as excited. It was more along the lines of aggravated.”

Lucy chuckled. “I bet.”

“Liz needs a crash course in farming.”

“Hmm. Do we know what kind of job skills they’re looking for?”

“Good question. I have no idea.” Gloria put the call on speaker and set the phone next to her computer as she researched Rasmussen Farms. “I found the ad. I’ll read it to you. ‘Part-time entry-level dairy farm milking position. Candidates must have a strong attendance record, the ability to adapt to a changing work environment and be committed to working as part of a team. Our family-owned farm takes pride in our cows, our employees and their families. This position is from five a.m. to ten a.m. six days a week.’”

“Your sister is going to hate the hours,” Lucy predicted.
